Why Lead-Acid Batteries ?

Most of the scientific inventions that created a sensation at one point of time or another got into oblivion in due course, consequent of change. But the lead acid battery, the old so called ‘black horse’ still holds its sway, despite turning white, for well nearly 150 years. It holds a pre-eminent position among all rechargeable batteries as a ‘reliable electricity in a light weight package’, performing well in the hands of public and does so safely at an acceptable cost. What is more, it is exceedingly suitable for efficient cycling.

These were the sole considerations that motivated TAFE to locate a new manufacturing facility for Lead-Acid Batteries at Maraimalainagar not distant from Chennai city, for a growth oriented centre, with an unbridled penchant for quality batteries for versatile applications in all spheres of human activity. From June 1993 to date, the growth of TAFE, Power Source Division, is a saga of not merely growth in all dimensions, but a facility of international directions in terms of state-of-the-art equipment and operations.

Growth of PSD

From a mere 3000 Nos. production of 2-wheeler batteries per month at commencement, as supporting infrastructure to AMCO, the sprawling modern plants, two in number today, within a matter of ten years, are churning out batteries valued at over Rs. 100 crores per annum for a variety of applications, such as 2-wheeler batteries, 4-wheeler batteries, tractor batteries, etc., catering to the needs of the endless types of vehicles touching the roads of the country, tubular batteries for train lighting, inverter and standby applications as well as VRLA batteries for UPS and automotive purposes.

What is so special about PSD batteries ?

Although lead acid batteries are often seen as being based on stable established technology, most lead acid battery designs are now based on highly complex chemistry, new lead – alloys and other high-tech materials.

To many, the most familiar use of a lead-acid battery is to start the engine in their cars. However the modern lead acid battery is also a vital ingredient in providing reliable and smooth electric power for telecom and for a wide range of IT equipment. This is resulting in strong demand for VRLA batteries as well. Growth is also occurring in sales of batteries for UPS and motive power.

Improved manufacturing techniques and better materials are clearly vital to the ongoing success of the industry. R&D with the production of ever better lead-acid batteries thus comes as a vital ongoing commitment, if the industry is to maintain and continue to expand the commercial successes.

PSD operations are not bogged down to any foreign technology. It is in-house research and development that has made a marked difference in the quality of PSD batteries compared to those available in the market. And it is the experience gained in understanding the role of every parameter going into plate technology that has made these batteries unique in every respect.

In a manner to capitalize on this experience, PSD evolved its own know-how to producing several types of lead-acid batteries for a variety of applications and these are available in the market with different brand names.
